Security is one of the most important considerations when choosing a garage door, particularly for integral garages that connect directly to the house. Not all garage doors offer the same level of protection, and the differences are worth understanding.

Sectional garage doors are generally considered the most secure standard residential option. They have no external handles or locks that can be attacked from outside, the panels interlock tightly when closed, and they’re fitted with internal locking mechanisms that engage automatically when the door closes. They’re also harder to force open from the outside than up-and-over designs.

Roller garage doors offer good security for most properties, particularly when fitted with side locking bars and an alarm-ready motor. The solid curtain of a roller door is difficult to lever or prise open, and quality motors lock the door securely when closed.

Up-and-over doors can vary significantly in security. Better quality canopy mechanism doors are reasonably secure, but cheaper models can be vulnerable to being forced open by pushing the panel inward and lifting. If you have an up-and-over door, ensuring it has a robust locking mechanism is important.

Regardless of door type, adding a good alarm system and ensuring the connecting door to the house (if you have an integral garage) is also secure makes a significant difference to overall property security.
