A well-made and properly maintained garage door should give you somewhere between 15 and 30 years of reliable service, though the actual lifespan depends on the type of door, the quality of the materials, how often it’s used, and how well it’s been looked after along the way.
Up-and-over doors are one of the more robust types, with minimal moving parts, and often last 20 years or more with basic maintenance. Roller garage doors are similarly long-lived if the motor and spring mechanism are serviced periodically. Sectional doors tend to perform well over a similar timeframe, provided the springs and hinges are checked regularly.
The biggest factors that shorten a garage door’s life are neglect and incorrect adjustment. A door that’s slightly out of alignment puts extra strain on the springs and motor over time, which is why an annual check — especially on electric doors — is worth doing.
Signs your door may be coming to the end of its useful life include increased noise or vibration, slow or uneven movement, visible rust or corrosion on metal panels, sagging on timber doors, and increasingly frequent breakdowns.
If your garage door is showing these signs, it doesn’t always mean immediate replacement — in some cases, a spring or cable replacement can extend its life significantly. But if you’re repairing it frequently, a new door is often more cost-effective in the long run.
