Choosing a Garage Door Colour: The Most Popular Colours in the UK

Posted On: March 16, 2026

Your garage door can take up a large part of the front of your house, so the colour you choose makes a big difference to kerb appeal. Spring is when many homeowners start planning exterior improvements, so here’s our guide to the most popular garage door colours in the UK and how to choose the right one for your home.

Anthracite grey (RAL 7016)

Anthracite grey has become the go-to colour for modern homes. It pairs well with grey uPVC or aluminium windows, works with both brick and render, and hides dirt better than white. It’s the colour we install most often across Leicester and the Midlands — you can see an example in our anthracite grey side-hinged door case study.

Traffic white and classic white

White remains a popular, timeless choice, especially on homes with white windows and fascias. It keeps a frontage looking bright and clean, although it does show dirt more readily, so expect to give it a wash a few times a year.

Woodgrain and timber-effect finishes

Golden oak, rosewood and other woodgrain finishes give the warmth of timber without the maintenance. They suit traditional and cottage-style properties particularly well and are available on steel sectional and side-hinged doors.

Black and jet black

Black gives a bold, contemporary look and works well with black window frames and modern render. It can absorb more heat in direct sun, so it’s worth discussing with us if your garage faces south.

Greens, blues and heritage colours

Sage green, chartwell green and dark blue are increasingly popular for homeowners who want something a little different. They work especially well on period homes and can be matched to a front door for a coordinated look.

How to choose the right colour

  • Match your windows and front door — the safest way to create a cohesive frontage
  • Consider the brick or render — grey and black sit well against red brick; woodgrain suits warmer tones
  • Think about maintenance — darker colours and woodgrain finishes hide everyday dirt
  • Check your street — some estates and conservation areas have restrictions on exterior changes
  • Ask for samples — colours can look different in daylight than on a screen

Does colour affect the type of door?

Most colours are available across sectional, roller, side-hinged and up-and-over doors, although the exact range depends on the manufacturer. Hörmann, for example, offers a very wide RAL colour palette as well as several woodgrain finishes.
