Case Study: Four Hormann LPU42 Sectional Doors – Melton Mowbray Carport Transformation
At Garage Door Secure, we love a project that challenges us to think beyond a standard single-door replacement — and this installation in Melton Mowbray was exactly that. Our customer had an existing carport that, while structurally sound, was open on both its front and rear elevations. That meant no meaningful security, no protection from the weather, and a space that was effectively wasted for most of the year. The brief was to change all of that, and to do it in a way that looked like it had always been part of the property.
After visiting the site and taking detailed measurements, we specified four Hormann LPU42 insulated sectional doors with vision panels — two for the front elevation and two for the rear. The LPU42 is one of Hormann’s most trusted residential sectional panels, and for good reason. Each section is 42mm thick and foam-injected, giving the door a high level of thermal insulation that makes a real difference in an enclosed space, particularly through the colder months. For a carport that the customer wanted to use as practical, year-round storage and parking, insulation wasn’t a luxury — it was essential.
The vision panels were a deliberate choice. Enclosing a carport fully can sometimes result in a dark, unwelcoming space, and we were keen to avoid that. By incorporating glazed vision panels into each door, we ensured that natural light continues to flow into the space throughout the day. The effect is a carport that feels open and considered rather than closed off, while still providing complete security when the doors are shut.
Each of the four doors was fitted with a Hormann Supramatic electric operator — Hormann’s flagship domestic drive unit. The Supramatic is a quiet, reliable motor that integrates seamlessly with the sectional door system, and in this case each unit was also set up with Bluetooth and smartphone compatibility via the Hormann BiSecur platform. That means the customer can open, close and check the status of any of the four doors directly from their phone, whether they’re in the car approaching the property or away from home entirely. For a four-door setup, that level of convenience and control is transformative.
The sectional door mechanism itself was also ideal for this application. Unlike an up-and-over door, a sectional door rises vertically before travelling horizontally beneath the ceiling, meaning there is no outward swing to worry about. With vehicles parked close to the doors on both elevations, this made for a much cleaner, safer operation.
The finished installation has completely changed how the customer uses their property. What was previously an exposed, semi-functional carport is now a secure, insulated garage space accessible from two sides — with smart technology built in as standard. The doors have also added considerably to the visual appeal of the exterior, sitting flush with the building line and giving the whole frontage a clean, cohesive look.
